Ice, topical numbing medication, or injectable local anesthetic may be used when appropriate to improve comfort.
How Many Kybella Treatments Are Needed for Best Results?
The number of Kybella sessions varies. You can get up to six treatments, with each session scheduled at least one month apart. The number of injections and total treatments will be based on your submental fat distribution and treatment goals.
Many people begin seeing visible improvement after two to four treatments, although some people in clinical studies received all six. We’ll evaluate your progress between appointments and determine when you’ve reached the result you’re seeking.
How to Prepare for a Kybella Treatment
Before treatment, give us a complete picture of your medical history and the medications and supplements you take.
In particular, let us know if you:
- Take an anticoagulant, antiplatelet medication, or another medication that affects blood clotting
- Have a bleeding disorder
- Have difficulty swallowing or a history of swallowing problems
- Have had surgery or cosmetic treatment involving your face, neck, or chin
- Have a medical condition in or near your neck
- Have an infection, sore, or other problem in the planned treatment area
- Are pregnant, planning a pregnancy, breastfeeding, or planning to breastfeed
Kybella can cause substantial bruising, so medications that affect clotting are especially important to discuss. Do not stop a prescribed medication on your own. If a medication change is appropriate, follow the instructions of the healthcare professional who prescribed it.

What to Expect After Kybella
Swelling is one of the most common reactions after Kybella. You may also experience bruising, pain, numbness, redness, or firmness beneath your chin. Although you can generally resume routine daily activities, visible swelling may make some people prefer a few quieter days after treatment.
You may use a cold pack as directed to make the area more comfortable. Follow the aftercare instructions we give you and avoid rubbing or manipulating the treatment area unless specifically instructed otherwise.
Most reactions improve with time, but contact us promptly if you notice an uneven smile, facial muscle weakness, trouble swallowing, worsening redness or pain, an open sore, or drainage from the treatment area. These symptoms can indicate less common complications that need medical attention.
Kybella works gradually, so the contour beneath your chin changes over time rather than immediately after your injections.
How Long Does Kybella Last?
Kybella destroys the fat cells that receive treatment. Once those cells have been destroyed, they can no longer store or accumulate fat, so additional Kybella treatment isn’t generally expected after you’ve reached your desired result.
Your appearance can still change over time. Remaining fat cells may enlarge with weight gain, and aging can affect the skin and tissues beneath your chin.
