What is Kybella®?

Kybella® is the first and only FDA-approved injectable treatment designed to reduce excess fat below the chin. It’s a safe and effective way to improve your profile without surgery.

Benefits of Kybella®

Kybella® offers benefits such as:

  • Short treatment times
  • Minimal discomfort
  • Minimal downtime
  • Long-lasting results
  • No incisions, surgery, or scars

How Kybella® Works

Kybella® is a synthetic version of a naturally occurring molecule called deoxycholic acid. Deoxycholic acid exists in the human body and its purpose is to break down dietary fat.

Kybella® uses synthetic deoxycholic acid to destroy fat cells under your chin. Whether the fullness is a result of genetics, weight fluctuations, or aging, Kybella® is an effective way to reduce it.

Ideal Candidates for Kybella®

Sixty-seven percent of people surveyed by the American Society for Dermatologic Surgery said that they are bothered by fat below their chin. This excess fat, which some people refer to as a “double chin”, is actually a common condition called submental fullness. You don’t have to be overweight to struggle with submental fullness; genetics and aging can work against you.

Kybella® may be right for you if:

  • Are 18 or older
  • You’re bothered by fat under your chin
  • You feel that you look older or heavier than you really are
  • You aren’t interested in surgery
  • You aren’t seeing results through diet and exercise

What To Expect During Your Personalized Kybella® Treatment

Your appointment will start with a consultation. Our Aesthetic Nurse Injectors will assess your degree of submental fullness and confirm your candidacy for Kybella®.

Then they will mark the injection sites and sterilize the area. A numbing cream can be applied to reduce discomfort. You will receive a series of small and quick injections. The number of injections given will depend on how much fullness you have beneath your chin.

How to Prepare for a Kybella® treatment

Essential fatty acids: Ginkgo biloba, garlic, flax oil, cod liver oil, vitamin A, vitamin E, St. John’s Wort, and other supplements should not be ingested three days before Kybella to minimize bruising and bleeding.

Anti-inflammatory drug: Optional blood-thinning drugs like Aspirin, Motrin, Advil and other NSAIDS should be avoided a week prior to your treatment. These cause excessive bruising and bleeding.

Skin irritants: To decrease redness and irritation, glycolics and retinoids should be discontinued 2-3 days prior to the treatment.

Other substances: It’s best to avoid alcohol, caffeine, high-sodium and high-sugar foods, spicy foods, refined carbohydrates, and cigarettes two days before your treatment. These can increase the risk of bruising and swelling after Kybella.

What to Expect After Kybella®

Receiving Kybella® injections shouldn’t get in the way of your normal routine. You will likely be able to drive home or return to work right after your appointment.

Some swelling and bruising is to be expected and can be improved by icing the area and avoiding blood thinners. Avoiding strenuous exercise for several days will also help.

Kybella® works gradually. You should begin to see results after four weeks and those results can continue to improve for up to twelve weeks.

Vitamin E supplements, alcoholic beverages and salty foods are particularly notorious for increasing facial swelling, so avoid them for at least 48 hours post-treatment. In addition to this, you will also be advised against vigorous exercise and other cosmetic treatments after the procedure.

Strenuous exercise, sun and heat exposure should be avoided for at least a week post-treatment. Exercise causes an increase in blood flow, which will increase swelling and slow down the healing process.

Cosmetic treatments such as injectables, ultrasound, laser, peels, facials and microdermabrasion in the treatment area would also need to be postponed until you are completely healed.

How Long Does Kybella® Last?

Kybella® permanently eliminates treated fat cells. You shouldn’t need more appointments after you’ve achieved your desired results.

Keep in mind that remaining fat cells can expand with weight gain. Eat well and exercise to maintain your Kybella® results.

Cost of Kybella® Treatment

The cost of reducing your double chin with Kybella® depends on factors such as the number of vials used and the number of treatments needed to achieve good results. Our Aesthetic Nurse Injectors can provide you with a personalized price estimate.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Kybella painful?

Kybella injections can cause some discomfort during and after treatment. While the injections are generally tolerable, patients may feel slight stinging or burning as the deoxycholic acid begins breaking down fat cells. Post-treatment, some patients experience swelling, tenderness, and a mild burning sensation, which are temporary. Numbing agents or ice before injections minimize discomfort during the procedure.

Can I go back to work after Kybella treatment?

Most patients can go back to work or their daily routine immediately after a Kybella treatment. However, due to swelling, bruising, or mild redness in the treatment area, some may prefer to schedule their session when they have a few days off. The swelling is a normal part of the process and can last up to a few weeks.

Can fat come back after Kybella treatment?

No, the fat cells destroyed by Kybella are permanently eliminated from the body and cannot regenerate. However, maintaining the results requires a healthy lifestyle. Significant weight gain after treatment can cause the remaining fat cells to expand and potentially alter the contours of the treated area.

How does Kybella compare to CoolSculpting for double chin reduction?

Both Kybella and CoolSculpting are non-surgical treatments for reducing submental fat, but they differ in approach:

  • Kybella: Includes a series of injections and is ideal for patients who want a more targeted approach and don’t mind minor swelling or downtime after injections.
  • CoolSculpting: Involves using a cooling device to freeze and destroy fat cells. It is non-invasive and does not involve needles, making it appealing to those who want a completely non-invasive option. However, it may require multiple sessions as well.

Both methods are effective, and the choice is based on individual preferences, the amount of fat, and the consultation.

How does Kybella compare to liposuction for double chin reduction?

Kybella and liposuction are both effective for reducing double chin fat, but they differ significantly:

  • Kybella: Non-surgical and minimally invasive with no incisions, making it a great option for those wanting to avoid surgery. It requires multiple treatments, and results take time to appear. Downtime is minimal but may include swelling and tenderness.
  • Liposuction: Surgical and more invasive, with immediate and more dramatic results. It is a one-time procedure but requires anesthesia and a longer recovery period. Liposuction may also be better suited for those who have larger amounts of fat or want more pronounced results quickly.

Do You Offer Anything for Pain or Anxiety Related to My Treatment?

Yes! We are excited to offer the addition of Pro-Nox to any treatment or procedure at Park Meadows Aesthetics! Pro-Nox (Nitrous Oxide), also known as laughing gas, helps patients to relax, yet remain awake during treatment and is delivered through a small mask over the nose. As the gas begins to work, the patient becomes less agitated and nervous. The effects of nitrous oxide are mild. It is safe to use, and quickly eliminated from the body. If you're interested in adding this to your treatment or procedure, let us know!
