BOTOX® Vs. Xeomin®: Your Questions Answered

When BOTOX® Cosmetic first emerged as a treatment for fine lines and wrinkles nearly two decades ago, it was revolutionary. The only product of its kind, BOTOX® became a household name, and millions of people turned to it to achieve their cosmetic goals. Since then, very similar options such as Xeomin® have hit the market after undergoing rigorous clinical trials.

If you’re trying to decide between BOTOX® and Xeomin®, our licensed nurse injectors would be happy to help you make an informed choice during a complimentary cosmetic consultation. In the meantime, we’ve answered some of the top questions patients ask regarding how the two options compare.

What is the Difference Between BOTOX® and Xeomin®?

The primary difference between BOTOX® and Xeomin lies in the formulas. The active ingredient in both prescription medications is botulinum toxin type A, but while BOTOX® has an accompanying protein, Xeomin® does not. Xeomin® is the result of a unique purifying process that removes proteins that are thought to be unnecessary to the treatment.

Beyond the formulas, BOTOX® generally has a slightly faster onset. Onset refers to the time it takes for someone to see visible results after treatment. With BOTOX®, you may see results within 24 to 48 hours, and with Xeomin®, that time frame is often closer to three or four days.

The two products differ further, though these considerations may not directly impact which option you choose. For example, separate companies make the neurotoxins; Allergan is responsible for BOTOX®, while MERZ Aesthetics® is behind Xeomin®.

Who Should Consider Xeomin® Over BOTOX®?

Many people are excellent candidates for both Xeomin® and BOTOX. Choosing one over the other often comes down to personal preferences and a discussion with our experienced staff.

You may have heard people say that an area of the face can become resistant to BOTOX® over time. In some cases, the area becomes immune to the proteins that coat the active treatment ingredient and not the active ingredient itself.

Some think that as a “naked” injectable, Xeomin® comes with a lower chance of developing resistance. If you’ve noticed that you aren’t seeing the same results from BOTOX® that you once did, it may be worth looking into Xeomin® as an alternative.

Is Xeomin® as Effective and Long-Lasting as BOTOX®?

While it is much newer than BOTOX® and has a slightly different formula, Xeomin® is as just as effective. Both options work by temporarily relaxing the muscles responsible for unwanted facial creases, resulting in a smoother, more youthful look. Anecdotally, most patients who have tried each option report that they couldn’t notice a difference in cosmetic outcomes.

While everyone responds differently to injectables, results from BOTOX® and Xeomin® typically last upwards of three months. With either treatment, you can return to our practice for maintenance injections to extend the longevity of your refreshed look.
