What to Do Before Receiving BOTOX® Cosmetic or Fillers
Injectables require very little preparation to get a good result. The following tips will help you minimize bruising and swelling for an effortless cosmetic improvement:
- Avoid alcohol, especially wine, for three to four days before treatment
- Avoid NSAIDs such as ibuprofen (Advil®, Motrin®), Aleve®, and aspirin for three to four days, unless medically necessary
- Avoid supplements, particularly fish oil, for three to four days
- Follow a low-sodium diet leading up to treatment
- Stay well hydrated
- Avoid working out for at least one hour before your appointment
- Manage stress when possible, as elevated stress levels can increase bruising and swelling
- Consider taking an Arnica-Bromelain supplement prior to injections (available for purchase at our office)
- Drinking pineapple juice may help reduce inflammation due to its bromelain content
- Arrive with a clean face and no makeup
Additional Considerations Before Treatment
- Try to avoid getting dermal injections two weeks before and two weeks after vaccinations
- While there are no official CDC or FDA guidelines regarding cosmetic injections after COVID-19 vaccination, we recommend waiting at least two weeks after your final dose
- Avoid extensive dental work two weeks before and after receiving dermal fillers
- Plan ahead for possible swelling or bruising by scheduling your appointment at least two weeks before major events
Comfort Options During Treatment
Patients may choose to add Pro-Nox to their appointment for additional relaxation. Pro-Nox (nitrous oxide), commonly known as laughing gas, helps reduce anxiety while allowing you to remain awake and responsive. It is delivered through a small nasal mask, takes effect quickly, and is safely eliminated from the body shortly after treatment.
Things to Avoid After Getting BOTOX® Cosmetic
There’s virtually no downtime involved with BOTOX® Cosmetic. You should be able to resume most normal activities right away. However, there are a few things you should avoid:
- Don’t do anything to raise your heart rate immediately after getting BOTOX® Cosmetic. This includes a workout for four to six hours following your treatment.
- Avoid hot yoga, strenuous exercise, and sitting in a hot tub for 24 hours after the treatment.
- Don’t place your head below your heart for four to six hours after a BOTOX® Cosmetic treatment. That includes laying face-down for a massage or doing yoga.
- Don’t rub, massage, or apply pressure to the injection site.
We’ll never let you walk out the door without reviewing aftercare instructions and what to expect over the next few days. Our Registered Nurses are available to speak with you and answer any questions that may come up during the week.
Discover What Sets Us Apart
Our team is committed to your satisfaction. Here’s how we create a world-class experience for you:
- Products containing lidocaine are used when available to support comfort
- Ice is provided during treatment, and an extra ice pack is sent home with you
- Any necessary product massage is performed using medical-grade skincare
We frequently treat areas with higher blood flow, such as the lips and tear troughs. Swelling in these areas is normal, and patience during the healing process is encouraged.
Pro-Nox is also available as an optional add-on for patients seeking additional relaxation.
How to Take Your Treatment to the Next Level
We allow ample time during your appointment so you can ask questions and explore other services offered at Park Meadows Aesthetics. Many patients choose to learn more about treatments such as CoolSculpting®, professional skincare, or surgical options during their visit.
You may also consider combining services during the same appointment when appropriate.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do You Offer Anything to Help With Pain or Anxiety Related to My Treatment?
Yes. Pro-Nox is available for most treatments and helps patients remain relaxed while fully awake. If you’re interested in adding Pro-Nox to your appointment, let our team know when scheduling or during your visit.
How Long Does a Typical Non-Surgical Cosmetic Appointment Take?
Most non-surgical cosmetic appointments last between 30 and 60 minutes, depending on the treatment and whether multiple services are performed. Your provider will review your plan, answer questions, and ensure you feel comfortable before, during, and after treatment.
How Often Should I Schedule Maintenance Appointments to Maintain Results?
Maintenance timing depends on the treatment you receive and how your body responds. BOTOX® Cosmetic is typically repeated every three to four months, while dermal fillers may last anywhere from several months to over a year. During follow-up visits, our team can help you determine an ideal schedule to maintain your results without over-treating.
Is There Anything I Should Avoid Eating or Drinking After My Treatment?
After injectables, it’s best to avoid alcohol for at least 24 hours, as it can increase the risk of bruising and swelling. Staying hydrated and eating a balanced diet can support healing, while limiting very salty foods may help reduce swelling in the first day or two.
What Side Effects Are Considered Normal After Injectables, and When Should I Call the Office?
Mild swelling, redness, tenderness, and bruising at the injection sites are common and usually resolve within a few days. You should contact the office if you experience severe pain, increasing swelling, unusual discoloration, or any symptoms that feel unexpected or concerning.
