If antiperspirants are not giving you enough control over heavy underarm sweating, BOTOX may be worth discussing. At Park Meadows Aesthetics in Lone Tree, Colorado, our BOTOX® injections are administered by experienced aesthetic nurse injectors. Krista and Kristy have been nurses for more than 20 years and are highly trained in BOTOX and dermal fillers.
Why BOTOX Can Reduce Underarm Sweat
Your nerves send chemical signals that tell sweat glands when to become active. With primary axillary hyperhidrosis, the underarms produce much more sweat than the body needs for temperature control.
BOTOX temporarily blocks the nerve signal that activates sweat glands where it is injected. The goal is not to stop sweating everywhere, but to reduce excessive perspiration in the treated underarms.
The FDA has approved BOTOX for severe primary axillary hyperhidrosis in adults when topical treatments have not controlled symptoms well enough. If heavy sweating starts suddenly, occurs in other areas, or may be related to a medication or health condition, an evaluation is important. Treating the symptom alone could overlook an underlying cause.
What Happens at an Underarm BOTOX Appointment?
BOTOX is placed through a series of small injections across the areas where sweating is most pronounced. Before moving forward, we review your health history, medications, symptoms, and what you have already tried.
If injections make you uneasy, our appointment preparation guide explains several ways we support patients during injectable visits. Depending on the appointment, ice, products containing lidocaine when available, or optional Pro-Nox may make the experience easier. You can also review our tips on mistakes to avoid before injectable appointments and preparing for BOTOX.
How Long Can the Results Last?
The reduction in perspiration is temporary. In FDA clinical studies of primary axillary hyperhidrosis, the median response after the first BOTOX treatment lasted 201 days, or roughly six and a half months. Individual results vary, and repeat injections may be considered when the effect begins to fade.
